Dribble Gauntlet Through Defensive Zones
Ball handlers dribble down a lane split into three zones, each with a defender who may only play inside that zone, and try to reach the end without losing the ball. Students work on dribbling against progressive pressure, protecting the ball, and regaining control after beating each defender.
How to play
- Use cones to mark two lanes about 7 yards wide and 26 yards long, each split into three zones; put one defender in a pinnie in each zone (2 min).
- Everyone else lines up with a ball at the start of each lane; a new ball handler goes every 5 seconds.
- Each defender tries to steal the ball or push the dribbler out of the lane but may not leave their zone; once the dribbler enters the next zone, the previous defender is done.
- The ball handler earns one point per zone cleared; if they lose the ball, they retrieve it, exit along the side, and rejoin the line.
- Bring in three new defenders every 3 minutes; play five turns so everyone defends at least once (15 min).
- Finish by adding the group's points and asking each student for one key that helped them beat a zone (1 min).
Rules
- Defenders may only touch the ball, never the dribbler's body or arm.
- No leaving the lane or going back into a zone already cleared.
- Safety: the next ball handler does not start until the previous one has cleared the first zone.
- If you lose the ball, exit along the side so you don't get in anyone's way.
Variations
Easier
Defenders guard at a walking pace and may only touch the ball with one hand.
Standard
Three zones, each with one live defender who stays in their area.
Harder
The ball handler must change hands in every zone, and the last defender may chase back about 3 yards.
Adaptations
- A student with limited mobility uses their own lane with defenders who only take up space and don't try to steal.
- For students with low vision, give each zone a different cone color and have the defender call zone when they engage.
- Let more skilled students use a smaller ball or dribble two balls.
Learning goals
- Keep control of the ball against one defender after another.
- Change direction and hands to keep the ball away from the defender.
- Defend a limited space without fouling.
Equipment for a class of 25
- basketballs: 20
- cones: 24
- pinnies: 6
Teacher tip
Rotate defenders often so nobody spends long without dribbling. Leave about 2 yards between lanes so loose balls don't roll into the next one.
