Dribble-and-Shoot Triads with a Rotating Goalie
In groups of three, one player dribbles through a cone slalom and shoots at a cone goal, another plays goalie, and the third collects the ball. Students practice dribbling with both feet, shooting with the inside and the laces, and goalie positioning.
How to play
- Make 8 groups of 3 and give each one a 3-yard cone goal, a 4-cone slalom, and a shooting line 7 yards from the goal.
- Player A dribbles through the slalom, stops before the line, and shoots low; B plays goalie and C collects the ball and waits.
- After every shot, rotate: the shooter becomes the collector, the collector becomes the goalie, and the goalie becomes the shooter.
- Each goal earns the shooter a point and each save earns the goalie a point; everyone keeps their own score.
- Every 4 minutes change the focus: first inside-of-the-foot shots, then laces, and finally the weaker foot.
- Finish with 2 minutes in which the shooter calls the corner of the goal before shooting.
Rules
- Shots stay low: if the ball goes above the goalie's waist, the goal does not count.
- No one shoots until the goalie says "Ready."
- Goalies make saves standing or kneeling and never dive on a hard surface.
- No one walks in front of another group's goal.
Variations
Easier
Remove the slalom and let players dribble straight in and shoot from 5 yards.
Standard
Use a 4-cone slalom and low shots from 7 yards.
Harder
The goalie comes off the line as soon as the shooter passes the last cone, forcing a quick shot.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student pushes the ball by hand or strikes it with a soft bat from closer in, and can also play goalie.
- Visual impairment: use a ball with bells and high-contrast cones; the goalie claps to give a target.
- Skill level: students who have mastered the inside-of-the-foot shot must score in a specific half of the goal.
Learning goals
- Dribble through cones with short touches and eyes up.
- Strike low shots with the inside of the foot and the laces toward a chosen spot.
- Position themselves as goalie and react to the shot.
Equipment for a class of 25
- soccer balls: 8
- cones: 56
Teacher tip
Point every goal toward the same fence so no ball flies into another group. Coach the plant foot: it should land beside the ball and point at the goal.
