Dribble and Freeze: Stop It with a Body Part
Each student dribbles a ball around the area and, on a call, stops it with the body part named: sole, knee, bottom, or belly. It builds controlled dribbling, quick reactions, and body awareness.
How to play
- Mark a 60 by 60 ft area with cones. Everyone dribbles freely with soft touches, using all the space without bumping into anyone (2 min).
- Stopping calls: "Sole!" = step on the ball, "Knee!" = rest a knee on it, "Bottom!" = sit on it, and "Belly!" = lie face down with the ball under your stomach. Try each one (2 min).
- Game: the teacher calls every 10-15 seconds while the group dribbles; the first to stop earns a point, but nobody is out (4 min).
- Add direction calls: "Back!" = pull the ball back with the sole, "Switch!" = dribble the other way, "Two!" = non-dominant foot only (3 min).
- Two volunteers make the calls for 30 seconds, then rotate. To finish, everyone stops the ball their own way and says which stop was hardest (3 min).
Rules
- Keep the ball close: dribble, don't kick.
- Sit or lie on the ball slowly and in place, checking around you.
- On a call, stop before changing direction.
Variations
Easier
Use only two calls (sole and knee) and dribble at a walk.
Standard
Use four stopping calls plus the direction calls.
Harder
Give two calls in a row ("Sole and bottom!") done in order without the ball moving.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: move a large ball with a pool noodle and stop it with the noodle, a hand, or a wheel.
- Deaf or hard of hearing: also show each call on a picture card.
- Fitness level: strong dribblers use a smaller ball; students who struggle use a big, slow foam ball.
Learning goals
- Dribble while keeping the ball close to the foot.
- React to verbal calls by stopping the ball with different body parts.
- Change direction and foot while dribbling.
Equipment for a class of 25
- soccer balls: 25
- cones: 4
Teacher tip
With 6-year-olds, add one new call at a time and let them repeat it before adding another. Foam or size 3 balls prevent bumps when kids sit or lie on them.
