Dress Rehearsal: Half the Class Plays the Little Kids
Before an event with elementary kids, half the class runs the stations while the other half plays 8-year-olds with typical situations written on cards. Students practice managing groups and handling the unexpected.
How to play
- Set up three stations already planned for the event; group A splits into staff: coach, helper, and head timekeeper (4 min).
- Group B gets character cards: “I don't listen to instructions,” “I cry when I lose,” “I wander off to another station,” “I only want to be with my friend,” “I'm too scared to try”; play them respectfully, no mocking (2 min).
- Rotate through all three stations, four minutes each, on the head timekeeper's signal (12 min).
- Switch roles, hand out new cards, and run the rotation again (12 min).
- Each station shares one tough situation and how they handled it; write three solutions into the coach's guide (10 min).
Rules
- Act out the characters without exaggerating or making fun of little kids.
- Staff guide with words and gestures; never grab anyone to move them.
- Nobody leaves the station area.
- If things get out of hand, the head timekeeper stops play with the whistle.
Variations
Easier
Only two types of character cards.
Standard
Five different characters handed out at random.
Harder
Cards change mid-station when the teacher calls it.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: works as head timekeeper or coaches a station with little moving around.
- Hard of hearing: cards include a picture and staff use agreed visual signals.
- Anxious students: may pick their own card or be a helper instead of coach.
Learning goals
- Anticipate real situations at an elementary school event.
- Handle surprises calmly and respectfully.
- Coordinate event staff roles.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 24
- hula hoops: 8
- balls: 10
- pinnies: 15
- character cards: 28
- whistles: 1
Teacher tip
Write realistic cards and never base them on disabilities or physical traits. Common mistake: staff get stuck with one “kid” and leave the rest; remind them that the helper handles the individual case while the coach keeps the group going.
