Dowel Pass-Throughs: Narrowing the Grip Step by Step
Each student marks their dowel every 5 cm (2 in) and finds the narrowest grip that lets them pass it overhead without bending the elbows or arching the back. From that number they work through a shoulder mobility progression and track progress.
How to play
- Each student marks their dowel with tape every 5 cm (2 in) out from the center (3 min).
- Shoulder warm-up: arm circles, wide hugs and rotations with the dowel at chest height (3 min).
- Test: starting with a wide grip, move 5 cm narrower on each try until you find the narrowest grip that lets you pass the dowel with straight elbows and ribs down; record it in cm and as a multiple of shoulder width (4 min).
- Progression: 3 sets of 8 slow passes at the minimum grip plus 10 cm, a 3-second pause at the hardest point, and passes led by one arm (6 min).
- The partner watches for compensations (arched lower back, bent elbow, head forward), then repeat the test and record the final grip (4 min).
Rules
- Leave at least 6 feet of clear space around each person so the dowel doesn't hit anyone.
- Move slowly and with control; if the shoulder hurts, widen the grip.
- Keep the core braced and the ribs down throughout the pass.
- Dowels are laid on the floor, never leaned against the wall, when not in use.
Variations
Easier
Swap the dowel for a towel or resistance band, which gives at the hard point.
Standard
Minimum-grip test, pass-through progression and final grip log.
Harder
Do the passes lying face down, without gravity's help, to demand more end-range strength.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: does the passes sitting in a low-backed wheelchair using a band.
- Shoulder injury: works only up to face height with a wide grip and no pain.
- Autism: follows a video demo with the rep count on screen.
Learning goals
- Assess shoulder mobility with a simple, repeatable test.
- Improve shoulder girdle mobility with a controlled progression.
- Spot their own and others' postural compensations.

Teacher tip
The grip-to-shoulder-width ratio is a good number to track over the term. Keep the marked dowels by group to reuse them.
