Discus Roll: Releasing Off the Index Finger
A classic discus progression where students first roll the rubber discus along the ground and then release it low through the air. They work on the over-the-top grip, releasing off the index finger, and spinning the discus clockwise.
How to play
- Partners face each other about 25 ft apart with one rubber discus; demonstrate the grip: palm down, fingertips on the rim, fingers spread (2 min).
- Phase 1 (4 min): swing the straight arm back and forth without letting go; the partner checks that the discus stays in the hand.
- Phase 2 (4 min): release the discus at ground level so it rolls on its edge to the partner; the index finger is the last to touch it.
- Phase 3 (4 min): same motion but release at hip height so it flies low and lands flat between two cones 25–30 ft away.
- Phase 4 (4 min): partner contest: 5 rolls and 5 throws each; one point for every straight roll and every throw that lands between the cones.
Rules
- All pairs throw in the same direction, side by side, with 12 ft between pairs.
- No one picks up a discus until the teacher gives the retrieve signal.
- Hold the discus from above, never pinched between the fingers or with the thumb underneath.
- If a discus heads toward another pair, call it out loudly.
Variations
Easier
Roll the discus 15 ft and allow two fingers on the rim.
Standard
Roll it 25 ft and throw low through a cone goal 10 ft wide.
Harder
Narrow the cone goal to 5 ft and throw from a sideways stance.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student does the motion seated, swinging the arm alongside the wheelchair.
- Hearing impairment: signal throw and retrieve by raising a colored cone.
- Advanced students: add a half turn of the feet before release.
Learning goals
- Grip the discus palm down with the fingers on the rim.
- Release the discus off the index finger so it spins steadily.
- Correct a partner's technique with simple cues.
Equipment for a class of 25
- rubber discuses: 13
- cones: 24
Teacher tip
The classic mistake is releasing palm up, which makes the discus wobble: if it rolls crooked, the grip is wrong. Use rubber discuses or rigid rubber rings, never metal ones at this stage.
