Disc Freestyle: Judged Routine with Delays and Catches
Students learn the basic moves of disc freestyle: high-spin throws, nail delays, tips, behind-the-back and between-the-legs catches. In pairs or threes, they put together a one-minute routine to music that is scored on difficulty, execution and presentation.
How to play
- Demonstrate and practice a high-spin vertical throw to yourself (4 min).
- Open skill stations: nail delay, knee or foot tip, behind-the-back catch and between-the-legs catch; each student picks two (10 min).
- Pairs or threes create a 60-second routine with at least four tricks, a cooperative pass and a finish (10 min).
- Perform to music; two pairs act as judges with the difficulty, execution and presentation sheet (8 min).
- Read out scores and discuss which element was most original (3 min).
Rules
- Delays are done only with freestyle or standard discs, never heavy competition discs.
- Each pair uses a 5 x 5 m space and stays out of the others'.
- Before throwing high, check that nobody is underneath.
- The routine is judged, not the person: judges' comments are constructive.
Variations
Easier
The routine includes two tricks and a cooperative pass, with no music.
Standard
60-second routine with four tricks and music, judged by classmates.
Harder
The routine includes a chained delay-and-catch combo without the disc touching the ground.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: builds the routine with throws, hand tips and seated catches, scored with the same criteria.
- Hearing impairment: the pair marks routine changes with a visual count instead of the music.
- Autism: may perform the routine only for the judges and the teacher, without the whole class watching.
Learning goals
- Perform basic disc freestyle tricks.
- Create a creative, coordinated sequence to music.
- Evaluate artistic work using defined criteria.
Equipment for a class of 25
- flying discs: 15
- speaker: 1
- worksheets: 8
Teacher tip
The delay is hard: let students rely on catches and tips if it does not come. Best indoors or on calm days so the disc does not drift.
