Dinosaur Egg Hunt: Every Color to Its Nest
Four dinosaur families hunt for their eggs, balls of their color hidden around the playground, and carry them one at a time to their nest. If they find another family's egg, they leave it and tell that family where it is. It builds searching, color coding and teamwork.
How to play
- Hide 40 balls in four colors (10 per color) behind benches, trees or the fence, always visible from somewhere.
- Make four families of 6 and set each nest (two hoops) in a corner. Each family picks a dinosaur name and a color.
- On the whistle, everyone searches. Each dinosaur carries one egg at a time, with both hands, and sets it in the nest.
- If someone finds an egg of another color, they leave it and go tell that family where it is ("behind the blue bench").
- A round lasts about 6 minutes or until every family has 10 eggs: the goal is for the whole class to finish.
- Change the hiding spots while families rotate nests, and play a second round.
Rules
- One egg at a time, and walk when you reach the nest.
- Never take or hide another family's eggs.
- Slow down and look ahead near other dinosaurs.
Variations
Easier
Balls in plain sight, uncovered, on half the playground.
Standard
Ten eggs per family across the whole playground, and students must report other families' eggs.
Harder
Better-camouflaged eggs, and families may help each other only with spoken clues, no pointing.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student is the nest keeper or searches a flat area nearby with clues from classmates.
- Visual impairment: large, high-contrast balls or balls with bells, plus a guide partner.
- Fitness level: tired students walk; those who want more return on a longer loop around the outside cones.
Learning goals
- Search for objects around a space using a color code.
- Give classmates simple location directions.
- Work together so the whole group completes the challenge.
Equipment for a class of 25
- balls: 40
- hoops: 8
Teacher tip
In the first round many students grab any egg, so pause and loudly praise good reports. Snap a photo of the hiding spots to make cleanup quick.
