Dilemma Freeze Floor Hockey: Stop and Decide
A floor hockey game that the teacher freezes at chosen moments to hand one team a card with a fair play dilemma. The team has 30 seconds to decide what to do and applies it when play resumes, so students reflect on sports ethics while playing.
How to play
- Prepare 10 scenario cards: 'the puck went out off your stick and nobody saw', 'an opponent falls and you have an open net', 'your teammate insults the referee'.
- Make 4 teams of 6 on two 25x15 m (27x16 yd) courts; the extra student is the scenario reader.
- Play 6-minute games; on a double whistle play freezes and the reader hands a card to the team with the puck.
- The team has 30 seconds to decide, explains its choice in one sentence and resumes by acting it out.
- Each honest decision earns a fair play point; the final score adds goals and points (3 rounds, 20 min).
- Wrap-up (4 min): pick two scenarios with different decisions and discuss what a good sport would do.
Rules
- Sticks never go above the waist.
- During a freeze nobody moves or touches the puck.
- A team's decision is respected even if others disagree.
- Safety: no body contact and the puck stays on the floor.
Variations
Easier
Simple scenarios and one minute to decide.
Standard
Three freezes per game with 30 seconds to decide.
Harder
The other team may propose a different decision and the class votes on the fairer one.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: scenario reader, or goalie with a larger crease.
- Visual impairment: the reader reads the card aloud and a bright-colored puck is used.
- Beginners: may stop the puck with a foot before passing.
Learning goals
- Analyze real ethical dilemmas in sports.
- Make group decisions consistent with fair play.
- Control the puck and pass safely in floor hockey.
Equipment for a class of 25
- hockey sticks: 25
- floor hockey pucks: 3
- small goals: 4
- pinnies: 12
- scenario cards: 10
Teacher tip
Write scenarios close to what happens at recess. Freeze play when the action is calm so nobody collides when stopping.
