Diabolo Skills Stations
Students learn to start, keep spinning, and toss a diabolo in four stations with progressive challenges. Students work on fine arm coordination, controlling spin speed, and persistence with a new skill.
How to play
- Spend 3 minutes on the basic stance: hand sticks at waist height, diabolo on the ground to the right, and start by rolling it to the left.
- Set up 4 stations marked with cones and groups of 6, with one diabolo per pair; every 5 minutes blow the whistle and rotate.
- Station 1, start-up: roll the diabolo and lift it while it spins; count successful starts.
- Station 2, speed-up: pull with the right hand and let up with the left so it spins faster for 10 seconds.
- Station 3, control: fix the tilt by moving the right stick closer or farther; station 4, toss: spread the sticks, toss it a short height, and catch it on the string.
- Final 1-minute showcase: each pair shows its best trick at the same time.
Rules
- Keep at least 10 feet between pairs at every station.
- Tosses only happen at station 4 and never over a partner's head.
- While one practices, the partner watches and gives a tip without touching the equipment.
- On the whistle, stop the diabolo on the ground before rotating.
Variations
Easier
Stay at stations 1 and 2, starting with the diabolo resting on the ground.
Standard
Rotate through all four stations with start-up, speed, control, and toss challenges.
Harder
Add the swing trick or pass the diabolo to a partner with a short toss.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: work seated with a bigger, slower diabolo and longer sticks.
- Autism: picture cards showing each station's sequence and a fixed workspace.
- Advanced students: keep the diabolo spinning while walking between the cones.
Learning goals
- Coordinate alternating arm movements to keep the spin going.
- Fix the diabolo's tilt with small adjustments.
- Stick with learning a new technical skill.
Equipment for a class of 25
- diabolos: 13
- cones: 8
Teacher tip
Rubber diabolos hold up well to drops outdoors. The typical mistake is moving both hands at once; ask students to keep the left hand almost still.
