Deck-of-Cards Fartlek: The Card Sets Pace and Time
A group fartlek where a card from a Spanish deck decides each block: the suit sets the pace (coins, jog; cups, conversational pace; swords, brisk pace; clubs, free change) and the number sets the seconds, multiplied by ten. The randomness forces students to regulate effort on the fly and save some energy.
How to play
- Explain the suit-and-number code; remove the jacks, knights and kings, plus swords cards higher than 6 (3 min).
- Groups of five with one deck and one stopwatch; the group's timekeeper draws the first card (1 min).
- The group runs around the schoolyard for the block shown (e.g., swords 4 = 40 seconds at a brisk pace); afterward, 30 seconds walking and a new card (8 min).
- Rotate the timekeeper every three cards and continue the sequence (7 min).
- Each group notes which suit was hardest to hold and whether they saved energy when a long card came up (3 min).
- Group share: how do you regulate effort when you don't know what's coming? (3 min).
Rules
- The timekeeper runs too; they only stop the group to change cards.
- A brisk pace is never a sprint: it must be sustainable for the card's seconds.
- Run in the direction set by the teacher to avoid collisions between groups.
- If someone feels dizzy or unwell, the group stops and tells the teacher.
Variations
Easier
Use only cards 1 to 5, and swap swords for cups.
Standard
A deck without face cards, with swords capped at 6.
Harder
Add the kings as a "double card": two blocks back to back with no break.
Adaptations
- Low fitness: shifts each pace one step down (swords = conversational, coins = walk).
- Hearing impairment: the timekeeper signals the end of the block by holding up the card.
- Wheelchair user: uses the same code while pushing the chair around the perimeter.
Learning goals
- Regulate effort during blocks of unpredictable length and intensity.
- Tell different running paces apart in practice.
- Take on the timekeeper role and manage the group.
Equipment for a class of 25
- decks of cards: 6
- stopwatch: 6
Teacher tip
Tape a summary card with the suit code to each stopwatch. If you don't have Spanish decks, a standard deck works with the suits reassigned.
