Datchball: Synchronized Attack on the Count of Three
A datchball tactics session focused on coordinating simultaneous throws at one target, because a single player struggles to catch or dodge two balls at once. It also covers the defensive answer: who stands in front to catch.
How to play
- Opening question: why is a lone throw easy to catch? Explain the count of three and choosing a target with your eyes (2 min).
- Three throwers vs one defender in a 5 x 5 m zone: they throw together on the captain's count, then separately; compare how many hits each way gets (6 min).
- Shield defense: four defenders put their two best catchers in front and the others behind; attackers try to break the shield (6 min).
- 7 vs 7 game: a synchronized attack that gets someone out counts as two outs (9 min).
- Each team explains what signal it used and how many synchronized attacks it tried and landed (2 min).
Rules
- Throws below the shoulders, synchronized attacks included.
- Only the captain on duty calls the count out loud.
- Target someone who's facing you and ready, never someone who's down.
- Collect balls without crossing the center line.
Variations
Easier
Two synchronized throwers and a defender without a shield.
Standard
Three throwers and shield defense.
Harder
Synchronized attack with no spoken count: only an agreed-upon signal.
Adaptations
- Deaf or hard-of-hearing students: the attack signal is visual, a raised hand with three fingers folding down.
- Shoulder injury: plays captain, giving the signal and picking the target without throwing.
- Shy students get the observer role, counting successful attacks and reporting them at the end.
Learning goals
- Understand why coordinated throws are more effective.
- Organize a defense that uses the best catchers.
- Communicate with clear signals within the team.
Equipment for a class of 25
- foam balls: 12
- cones: 16
- pinnies: 15
Teacher tip
Let each team invent its own signal; when signals are visible, opponents learn to read them, which is tactics too. Typical mistake: they throw together but each at a different target.
