Cup Passing Rhythm Challenge
Sitting on the floor, students learn a cup rhythm of claps, taps, and passes, then link it in a circle by passing the cup to the next person without losing the beat. Students work on hand-eye coordination, rhythm, and staying in sync with the group.
How to play
- Give each student a cup and seat the class in two circles of 12 or 13, kneeling or cross-legged, with the cup upside down in front of them (1 minute).
- Learn part one (5 minutes): clap, clap, three taps on the cup, clap, and lift the cup; repeat slowly until everyone has it.
- Learn part two (5 minutes): switch the cup to the other hand, tap its open end on the floor, and set it upside down in front of the person on the right.
- In the circle (5 minutes): the whole class does the rhythm together and each student picks up the cup from the person on the left at the end of every cycle; count how many cycles the circle keeps going.
- Final challenge (3 minutes): with music, speed up after each successful cycle; the circle with the most cycles without a pile-up wins.
- 1-minute wrap-up: stack the cups in the middle of each circle.
Rules
- Set the cup down in front of your neighbor; never toss it.
- If there is a pile-up, everyone stops, takes one cup, and restarts on the count of four.
- Tap gently so the cups don't crack.
- Wait quietly until everyone is ready to start.
Variations
Easier
Do only part one of the rhythm, with no passing.
Standard
The full rhythm with a pass every cycle.
Harder
Double circle: the outer ring passes left and the inner ring passes right at the same time.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: join from a chair with a low table or bench in the circle.
- Visual impairment: high-contrast cups and a neighbor who says "cup" when setting it down.
- Lower skill: sit next to a confident classmate and keep the tempo slow.
Learning goals
- Perform a hand rhythm sequence accurately.
- Sync your own rhythm with the whole group.
- Cooperate so the circle runs without pile-ups.
Equipment for a class of 25
- stacking cups: 26
- music
Teacher tip
Hard plastic cups hold up best. Teach the rhythm in chunks with lots of repetition; a familiar song in the background often helps students memorize it.
