CPR Skills Check-Off with Peer Checklist
In groups of 4, each student performs a full hands-only CPR sequence on a manikin while a classmate scores it with a checklist. The focus is on quality: rate, depth, and minimal interruptions.
How to play
- Review (4 min): scene safety, check response, shout for help and an AED, call 911, open the airway, check breathing, and compress the center of the chest with straight arms at 100-120 per minute, about 2 inches deep.
- Groups of 4 per manikin with four roles: rescuer, evaluator, rhythm counter, and bystander who calls 911 when asked.
- The rescuer runs the full sequence and 2 minutes of compressions. The evaluator marks each of eight checklist items as done, partly done, or missed.
- Afterward, the evaluator gives feedback using 'two stars and a wish': two strengths and one specific fix.
- Rotate roles every 4 minutes until all four have been rescuer (16 min).
- Second try (5 min): each student repeats 1 minute focusing only on their wish.
Rules
- Never practice compressions on a classmate; only on the manikin.
- Kneel on a mat to protect your knees.
- Evaluators judge the technique, not the person, and always respectfully.
Variations
Easier
Cut the checklist to four items: call, hand position, straight arms, and rate.
Standard
Eight-item checklist with 2 minutes of compressions.
Harder
Add 2 rescue breaths every 30 compressions and the arrival of an AED trainer.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: serve as evaluator and bystander, or compress with the manikin on a table.
- Hearing impairment: the counter taps the rhythm on the shoulder or uses a light.
- Less strength: work in 1-minute sets and use body weight rather than arm strength.
Learning goals
- Perform high-quality CPR with the correct rate and depth.
- Assess a classmate's technique with a checklist.
- Improve based on specific feedback.
Equipment for a class of 25
- CPR manikins: 6
- observation checklists: 25
- mats: 6
Teacher tip
If you are short on manikins, use firm foam balls on a mat. Circulate and correct bent elbows and hands lifting off the chest.
