Countdown Fast Break: Ten Seconds to Score
When a team wins the ball, everyone counts down out loud from ten and the offense must shoot before zero. It trains fast breaks, getting back on defense and deciding when to run.
How to play
- Teams of 4 with their own goalie on a reduced full court; explain the countdown (3 min).
- One-way 3v2: the defending team steals and breaks to the other goal with the countdown (6 min).
- 4v4 game: the count starts after every steal or save; a goal before 0 is worth 2, after 0 it's worth 1 (8 min).
- Get-back rule: the team that loses the ball must have two players in their half before 5 (6 min).
- Quick debrief: when is it better to stop and set up? (2 min).
Rules
- Everyone counts out loud together, bench included.
- Nobody dives on the floor for the ball.
- Minimal contact, no grabbing.
- Subs every 3 minutes so everyone plays equal time.
Variations
Easier
Count from 15; defense may only intercept.
Standard
Count from 10 in 4v4.
Harder
Count from 7 and the whole team must get back.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: is the counter who signals the start, and their team gets 1 point for passing to them each possession.
- Deaf or hard-of-hearing students: the teacher shows the count with raised fingers.
- Students with low stamina: may call for a sub whenever they want.
Learning goals
- Break fast after winning the ball.
- Get back in time after losing it.
- Decide between running and setting up.

Teacher tip
Counting out loud adds a lot of energy and keeps everyone alert. Watch that the rush doesn't turn into pushing on the shot.
