Cooperative Timed Challenge with a Reset Break
A cooperative timed passing challenge in a fixed order, tried first under pressure and then after a one-minute reset break to breathe, regroup, and plan. It builds group stress management, communication, and teamwork.
How to play
- Groups of 8 or 9 in a circle. Each student always passes to the same person, not next to them, until the ball touches everyone and returns to the first player. Walk through it slowly (3 min).
- Pressure round: the teacher times the group and calls out to hurry. Five straight attempts; record the best time (4 min).
- Reset break: 1 silent minute breathing 4 seconds in and 6 out, then 2 minutes to suggest fixes, like switching spots or saying names before passing (3 min).
- Post-reset round: five more attempts using the plan, then compare times (4 min).
- Final challenge with two and then three balls at once, with a 30-second reset between attempts (3 min).
- Debrief (3 min): how did the mood change, who led, and how could a reset break help during group projects or before a test?
Rules
- Pass underhand, calling the receiver's name.
- If the ball drops, the intended receiver picks it up and play continues; no blaming.
- Safety: at least 4 m (13 ft) between groups so nobody chases a ball into another circle.
Variations
Easier
Groups of 6, passing to the person next to you.
Standard
Groups of 8 or 9, five pressured attempts, a reset, and five more.
Harder
A second reverse pattern at the same time with a different-colored ball.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: joins from a wheelchair and receives chest-height or rolled passes.
- Hearing impairment or autism: pressure shown on a visible timer instead of shouting, with changes announced ahead.
- Skill level: students who struggle to catch use a larger ball.
Learning goals
- Experience how time pressure affects a group.
- Use a reset break to calm down and plan.
- Cooperate and communicate effectively toward a shared goal.
Equipment for a class of 25
- soft balls: 9
- stopwatches: 3
Teacher tip
Keep the pressure lighthearted and never single anyone out. If a group gets stuck, hint that the answer is in how they stand, not in throwing harder.
