Cooperative Boccia: Ring the Jack
A cooperative boccia challenge where the whole group tries to surround the white jack with their balls inside a hoop without touching or moving it. It builds soft, accurate rolling, agreeing on who throws each ball, and group decision-making.
How to play
- Form groups of 5 or 6 and give each group a boccia set. Each group places a hoop on the floor 16 ft from its throwing line.
- The first student throws the white jack, trying to stop it inside the hoop. If it rolls out, throw it again until it stays inside.
- Challenge (4 min per round): the group has 12 balls. Each ball that stops inside the hoop without touching the jack scores 1 point. If a ball touches or moves the jack, the group loses 2 points.
- Before every throw, the group has 10 seconds to decide who throws and which gap in the hoop to aim for, closing the ring from all sides.
- Round 2: move the hoop to 23 ft. Round 3: the group chooses the distance and predicts its score; if it reaches the prediction, it earns 3 bonus points.
- Wrap-up (2 min): each group explains which throwing order worked best.
Rules
- Roll the ball and always throw from behind the line.
- Each student throws at least 2 balls per round.
- Decisions are made by listening to everyone; nobody throws for someone else.
- Walk to collect balls, and only when the teacher says so.
Variations
Easier
Hoop at 10 ft and the jack placed by hand in the center.
Standard
Hoop at 16 ft and the jack thrown by the group.
Harder
Replace the hoop with a chalk circle about 2 ft across.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: throw with a ramp; the student gives directions and a partner aims it, as in adapted boccia.
- Autism: give the student the scorekeeper role and keep them in the same spot in the throwing order.
- Advanced students: balls must reach the hoop from the outside in without rolling past the jack.
Learning goals
- Roll gently to stop the ball at a precise spot.
- Agree as a group on the order and direction of each throw.
- Value each teammate's contribution to a shared challenge.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Boccia set: 4
- hoops: 4
Teacher tip
This challenge works great in a classroom or small gym and sparks plenty of discussion; limit decision time so it keeps moving. The point-loss rule makes students think about how hard they throw.
