Contemporary Dance: Fall and Recovery
Based on Doris Humphrey's technique, students explore the cycle of losing balance, giving in to gravity, and recovering with a rebound or suspension. It builds weight control, dynamic balance, breath linked to movement, and composition.
How to play
- Explain fall and recovery in 2 minutes: the body tips off balance, yields, and returns to center. Standing, swing arms and torso forward and back, letting the weight drop (3 minutes).
- Practice off-balance moves in place: lean to one side until a foot has to step out to recover. Do it in all four directions for 3 minutes.
- Add suspension: just before recovering, hold the body for an instant at the highest point on an inhale. Practice for 3 minutes to slow music.
- Teach a controlled spiral fall to the floor onto the mat and a quick recovery to standing. Repeat 4 times on each side (4 minutes).
- In pairs, one partner offers a sequence of 4 falls and recoveries and the other learns it; then they join both into an 8 eight-count phrase (5 minutes).
- Show the phrases half the class at a time and discuss where the contrast between yielding and recovering showed best (2 minutes).
Rules
- Always fall to the floor in a spiral onto the mat, never straight forward or backward.
- Protect your head at all times: tuck your chin toward your chest on the way down.
- Each student keeps a 6-foot circle of space around them.
- If you feel dizzy, sit down and breathe before continuing.
Variations
Easier
Work only standing off-balance moves and one-step recoveries, without going to the floor.
Standard
Combine off-balance moves, suspension, and a controlled floor fall in one phrase.
Harder
Add linked falls that travel through space and include partner contact.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: explore fall and recovery with the torso and arms from the wheelchair.
- Visual impairment: work near a wall or with partner contact, without floor falls.
- Lower fitness level: reduce the number of floor falls and alternate them with standing off-balance moves.
Learning goals
- Explore weight and loss of balance as an expressive tool.
- Perform controlled falls and safe recoveries.
- Compose a partner phrase based on the contrast between yielding and recovering.
Equipment for a class of 25
- yoga mats: 25
- music

Teacher tip
Fear of falling is normal: progress very slowly and don't move to the floor until everyone controls the spiral.
