Complete the Set: Color Token Run
Each lap of the loop earns one blind draw of a colored ribbon from a bag, like opening a pack of trading cards, and the goal is to complete a set of six colors. Luck of the draw keeps everyone running continuously while they work out trades.
How to play
- Mark a 200 m loop. At the start, set out 4 cloth bags with ribbons in 6 mixed colors (about 150). Students run on their own and tuck their ribbons into a waistband or pocket (2 min).
- On the whistle, everyone runs. After each lap, they draw one ribbon from any bag without looking and keep running.
- Next to the start there is a "trading post" cone: there, 2 duplicate ribbons can be swapped for one missing color by dropping the duplicates back in a bag.
- Trades between classmates are allowed too, but only while jogging together during a lap, never standing still.
- Whoever completes all 6 colors shouts "Set!", returns the ribbons to the bags, reports a point to the teacher, and starts over. Run a 7-min block, take a 1-min break, and run another 7 min.
- One-minute wrap-up: count the whole class's completed sets and compare with the record from last class.
Rules
- Draw only one ribbon per full lap, passing every cone.
- No taking ribbons from others: trades happen only if both students agree.
- Pass on the outside and slow down before the bags to avoid collisions.
Variations
Easier
Shrink the set to 4 colors and the loop to 150 m.
Standard
Complete 6-color sets on a 200 m loop with a trading post for duplicates.
Harder
Require 8 colors and make the trading post swap 3 duplicates for one new color.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a shorter inside loop that earns one ribbon per lap.
- Visual impairment: replace colors with ribbons tied with one to six knots that can be identified by touch.
- Mixed fitness levels: the record belongs to the whole class, so every lap counts no matter the speed.
Learning goals
- Keep running continuously for two 7-minute blocks.
- Pace yourself to keep running until the end of each block.
- Negotiate trades honestly and respectfully.
Equipment for a class of 25
- colored ribbons: 150
- cloth bags: 4
- cones: 8
Teacher tip
If students start hanging around the trading post, limit it to one trade per lap.
