Competitive 2v2 Roundnet
Partner roundnet matches where players hit the ball down onto a small circular net at ground level, with up to three touches per team and 360-degree play around the net. Students work on hand striking, anticipation, teamwork, and self-officiating.
How to play
- Set up 6 nets at least 6 m (20 ft) apart and pair students; the 25th student starts as the official and rotates every game (2 min).
- Skill review: serve from 2 m (6 ft) away by hitting the ball down onto the net, and receive with soft open-hand touches; 3 minutes per pair (3 min).
- Basic rule: the receiving team gets up to three alternating touches and must return the ball by hitting it onto the net; after the serve, everyone can move all the way around the net.
- Games to 11, rally scoring: you lose the point if you fail to return the ball, hit the rim, or the ball bounces twice on the net (8 min).
- Ladder rotation: winners move up a net and losers move down; play a second game to 11 (8 min). Record results on the score sheet at the end (2 min).
Rules
- The receiver may not be interfered with; opponents give them a clear path.
- A ball that hits the rim or the ground is a point for the other team.
- Players call their own faults; if in doubt, replay the point.
- If a ball rolls into another court, stop and replay.
Variations
Easier
Allow one bounce on the ground before the first touch.
Standard
Three touches, serve from 2 m, and games to 11.
Harder
Serve from 2.5 m and allow only two touches per team.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: play at a net with a 1.5 m zone around it, and opponents serve toward that side.
- Autism or shyness: start with fixed partners and cooperative games before moving to competition.
- Fitness level: games to 7 with a one-minute break between them.
Learning goals
- Strike the ball accurately onto the net after moving.
- Coordinate the three touches with a partner.
- Self-officiate honestly and respectfully.
Equipment for a class of 25
- roundnet sets: 6
- cones: 12
- score sheets: 6
Teacher tip
Check the net tension before starting; if it's loose, the ball won't rebound. Space the nets well, since 360-degree play leads to collisions between courts.
