Color Zone Speed Laps
A loop is split into four colored sections, and each one is covered at a different speed: walk, jog, medium run, and sprint. Students practice telling movement speeds apart, changing pace, and noticing how hard they're working.
How to play
- Mark a rectangular loop of about 80 m (260 ft) split into four sections with colored cones: green is walk, yellow is jog, blue is medium run, and red is sprint (2 min).
- First guided lap: the whole group follows the teacher around the loop as the teacher exaggerates each speed (2 min).
- Block 1 (4 min): students run free laps following each section's color. After each lap, they check the pulse on their neck and say whether their heart is going slow, medium, or fast.
- Block 2 (4 min): the teacher changes the key: now red is walk and green is sprint. Students must adapt to the new order.
- Block 3 (5 min): in pairs, one runs and the other watches from inside the loop to see if the partner really changes speed at each color, then gives a score from 1 to 3. Switch after 2.5 minutes.
- Finish (3 min): each pair suggests a speed order and the group runs one lap with the chosen plan.
Rules
- Everyone runs the same direction and passes on the outside.
- In the sprint section, look forward and don't push anyone.
- Change speed when you pass the cone, not before.
- If you get tired, walk any section and rejoin the pace once you recover.
Variations
Easier
Use only three colors: walk, jog, and medium run, with no sprint.
Standard
Use four sections with four speeds and a key change halfway through.
Harder
Add a fifth section of backward or sideways running, and shorten sections to force quicker changes.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student does the loop in a wheelchair with three speeds or on a shorter inside loop.
- Blind or low vision: the student runs with a guide who calls out each section's color and speed.
- Lower fitness: the blue and red sections become jogging sections.
Learning goals
- Distinguish and hold different movement speeds.
- Change pace at a specific point.
- Connect speed with effort and heart rate.

Teacher tip
Some students run everything at the same speed; peer observation really helps them feel the difference. Put the sprint section on a straightaway and never right before a corner.
