Color Cross Quick Feet Taps
In pairs, one student stands in the middle of a cross of four colored cones and taps with the foot the cone their partner calls, always returning to the center. It builds quick footwork, reaction to signals, and eye-foot coordination.
How to play
- Each pair builds a cross: a flat disc cone in the center and four different colored cones 3 feet away, front, back, and both sides. One student in the middle and the partner outside, facing them (2 min).
- Round 1: the outside partner calls a color and the student taps the top of that cone with the sole of the foot, without stepping on it, and returns to center on both feet. 20 seconds counting taps, then switch roles; three turns each (4 min).
- Round 2, visual signal: instead of speaking, the outside partner points to the cone, then signals with just a glance or a nod (3 min).
- Round 3, memory: call two or three colors in a row ("red, blue, red") to tap in order before returning to center (3 min).
- Final duel: two crosses side by side with one caller for both; first to tap the color scores a point (2 min).
Rules
- Tap the cone with the sole of the foot, never stepping on or kicking it.
- Return to center on both feet after each tap.
- Keep at least 10 feet between crosses.
Variations
Easier
Use only two cones (front and back) and allow walking back to center.
Standard
Four cones and three rounds: verbal, visual, and memory signals.
Harder
Also call the foot ("red, left") and add two diagonal cones.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: place the cones on a table or bench and tap them by hand, or turn the wheels toward the called color.
- Deaf or hard of hearing: use the visual signal round for the whole activity.
- Fitness level: move cones to 2 feet for students who tire and to 5 feet for those who find it easy.
Learning goals
- Make quick foot movements in different directions, returning to center.
- React to verbal and visual signals.
- Memorize and perform short color sequences.
Equipment for a class of 25
- colored cones: 52
- flat disc cones: 13
Teacher tip
Have students wait in the center with slightly bent knees and weight on the balls of their feet. If you're short on colored cones, flat disc cones in four colors work too.
