Color-Coded Bouldering Traverse
Students traverse a low bouldering wall sideways using only the holds of one color, or the combination on their card, keeping their feet under 3 feet off the ground. Students practice climbing technique, balance and planning their moves.
How to play
- Lay mats along the entire base of the wall and mark a tape line 3 feet up that feet may not go above. Prepare route cards: "greens only," "red hands, any feet" and so on.
- Make 4 groups of 6. Each group has its own section of the wall; only one person climbs per section, with a spotter alongside.
- Each climber draws a card, studies the route from the ground for 20 seconds and traverses it left to right without touching the floor.
- If a foot touches the ground or the climber uses a hold of the wrong color, they step down and restart from that spot. Each completed traverse is one point.
- Rotate every 2 minutes: climber, spotter and two observers who give tips on footwork. Do about 3 full rotations.
- In the last 5 minutes, each group designs a color route for another group and tests it.
Rules
- Feet never go above the 3-foot line.
- Only one climber per section, always with a spotter.
- Never walk under a climber; wait off the mats.
- Climb without watches, rings or anything in your pockets.
Variations
Easier
Allow any hold for feet and restrict only the color for hands.
Standard
Hands and feet only on the card's color.
Harder
Traverse there and back, or in the opposite direction, without stepping down.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: traverse the lowest section with a partner's support, or do a seated grip challenge at the base of the wall.
- Visual impairment: the spotter describes where the next hold is ("up and to your right, a hand's width").
- Fear of heights or low strength: use short 5-hold traverses on big holds.
Learning goals
- Move sideways on the wall with good footwork.
- Read a route from the ground and plan moves.
- Follow bouldering safety rules.
Equipment for a class of 25
- bouldering wall: 1
- mats: 8
- cards: 20
Teacher tip
Remind students to climb with straight arms and weight on their feet; correct anyone who keeps their arms bent the whole time. Check for gaps between mats before starting.
