Color Chain: Collect in Your Card's Order
In pairs, students memorize a card with a sequence of colors and visit cones of those colors, spread around the space, in the exact order, picking up a clothespin at each one. It builds memory, color coding and purposeful movement.
How to play
- Spread 16 cones in four colors at least 5 yards apart, with 8 clothespins clipped to each.
- Give each pair a card with 4 colored dots in a row, for example red, blue, blue, yellow.
- Partners study it for 10 seconds, leave it face down at home base and go; any cone of the right color counts.
- At each cone they take one clothespin and clip it to their shirt. If unsure, they may go back and check the card.
- At home base they check the order: if it matches, they move up to a 5-color, then a 6-color card. Play 10 minutes.
- Return the clothespins to the cones and recall together the longest sequence anyone completed.
Rules
- Partners travel together.
- One clothespin per cone, and cones stay where they are.
- Run looking ahead and slow down before the cone.
Variations
Easier
Three-color sequences, and the pair carries the card.
Standard
Sequences of 4 to 6 colors memorized at home base.
Harder
Each color also has a way of moving (red is two-foot hops, blue is bear crawl) to get to the cone.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: their cones are grouped in a flat area, and the partner grabs any clothespins out of reach.
- Visual impairment: cones have a texture or sound for each color, and the card is read aloud.
- Fitness level: adjust distance by handing out cards with colors placed near or far from home base.
Learning goals
- Remember and follow a color sequence around a space.
- Choose the closest cone of each color.
- Check their own work and fix mistakes with a partner.
Equipment for a class of 25
- colored cones: 16
- clothespins: 128
- cards: 30
Teacher tip
Some pairs sprint to the first cone without thinking, so teach them to whisper the sequence before leaving. Laminate the cards by level so you can hand them out fast.
