Color Call Wall Bar Climb
Ribbons in four colors are tied on the wall bars, and students must place a hand or foot on the color that is called without touching the floor. They practice vertical and sideways climbing, alternating supports, and deciding how to find stable positions.
How to play
- Tie ribbons in four colors across the bars up to 5 feet high. Put a mat at the base of each wall bar section. Pairs: one climbs and one calls; switch every round.
- Start position (2 min): all four limbs on the lowest bar, facing the wall bars.
- Guided round (4 min): the teacher rolls the giant die and calls a body part and color: "right hand, blue." Everyone reaches for a bar with that color without letting go of the other three supports.
- Partner round (5 min): the caller makes up the commands; every command completed is a point. If the climber puts a foot on the floor, switch roles.
- Traverse round (5 min): commands include a direction ("left foot, red, to the right") so climbers travel across the wall bars.
- Wrap-up (2 min): talk about which positions were hardest and why three points of contact are safer than two.
Rules
- Always keep three points of contact while the fourth moves.
- Safety: nobody climbs above the marked height, and coming down is bar by bar, never jumping.
- Hands grip the bar with the thumb wrapped around it.
- One student per wall bar section.
Variations
Easier
Use only two colors and hand commands only.
Standard
Four colors with hand and foot commands plus a sideways traverse.
Harder
Hold each position for 5 seconds or chain two commands back to back.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: play on the lowest bars from the wheelchair, placing only the hands on the colors.
- Hearing impairment: the caller shows a card with the body part drawn and the color ribbon.
- Lower fitness: rest with both feet on the bottom bar between commands.
Learning goals
- Climb with alternating supports, keeping three points of contact.
- Find stable positions to complete each command.
- Tell right from left on a vertical surface.
Equipment for a class of 25
- wall bars: 6
- colored ribbons: 40
- mats: 6
- giant die: 1
Teacher tip
Place the ribbons so feet never go above about 3 feet. If many students get stuck, allow one pass per round.
