Coach in English: Lead Your Station with English Cues
In pairs, students plan and lead one station of a fitness circuit in English, using a bank of phrases for instruction, correction and encouragement. The rest of the class rotates through the stations following only English cues, building communication, leadership and language skills in a real movement setting.
How to play
- Hand out the phrase bank: instructions like squat down, keep your back straight, switch sides; corrections like lower your hips; and encouragement like keep going or nice job; practice pronunciation as a group (5 min).
- Each pair gets a station card, such as squats, jump rope, wall passes or plank, and prepares its explanation and demo in English (5 min).
- Seven-station circuit, 2 minutes per station with 30 seconds to switch; at each one the coaching pair leads arriving groups only in English, and each member of the pair works out in half the rounds (17 min).
- Feedback in English: each group says one thing the coaching pair did well and one thing to improve, using I liked how you... and next time you could... (3 min).
Rules
- Safety cues like stop or watch out are learned before starting and followed right away.
- If someone doesn't understand a cue, they ask in English, could you say that again?, and the pair demonstrates again.
- Keep safe spacing between stations with cones.
- Nobody laughs at anyone's pronunciation.
Variations
Easier
Use cards with the cue written in English plus a drawing, so the pair only reads and demonstrates it.
Standard
Seven stations led in English with instruction, correction and encouragement.
Harder
Pairs add a progression halfway through their turn and explain it in English without the card.
Adaptations
- Hearing impairment: cues come with gestures and the written card, and visual signals are used for switching.
- Language difficulties: get the station in advance to prepare the explanation.
- Limited mobility: lead an upper-body station and do it seated when rotating.
Learning goals
- Give clear movement instructions in English.
- Lead a small group with positive, specific feedback.
- Complete a fitness circuit following cues in another language.

Teacher tip
Coordinate with the English department to build the phrase bank together. Grade clarity above all, not perfect pronunciation.
