Clown Entrances and Exits
Wearing a red nose, students practice the clown's entrance: looking at the audience, reacting to what happens, and exiting with a personal gesture. Students work on stage presence, exaggerated gestures, and letting go of inhibitions in a respectful setting.
How to play
- Seat the class in a semicircle facing a stage area marked with cones. Spend 3 minutes explaining the clown's rule: everything you feel shows, and the audience is your friend.
- The look (5 minutes): in turns of 4, students enter wearing the nose, stand still looking at the audience for 5 seconds, and exit; the audience just claps.
- Entrance with an emotion (6 minutes): each student draws a card with an emotion (surprise, embarrassment, pride) and enters exaggerating it more and more.
- The imaginary object (6 minutes): in pairs, one enters and discovers something invisible on the floor (a dollar bill, a bug), then the partner enters and reacts to the first one's reaction.
- Exit with style (3 minutes): each student invents a signature exit (a fake stumble, an over-the-top bow) and shows the class.
- 2-minute share: which entrance made you laugh and why?
Rules
- Laugh with your classmate, never at them.
- Falls are fake and slow; no one drops to the floor hard.
- The audience always claps at the end of each turn.
- No one has to talk; a clown can be silent.
Variations
Easier
Enter in groups of 4 at a time to share the attention.
Standard
Solo or partner entrances with an emotion and an imaginary object.
Harder
Enter with a problem to solve (a stuck door, a wobbly chair) in 30 seconds.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: enter in a wheelchair or start already on stage, focusing on eye contact, face, and arms.
- Shyness: always start in a group and allow one pass; the nose works like a protective mask.
- Advanced students: link two opposite emotions in the same entrance.
Learning goals
- Show stage presence by keeping eye contact with the audience.
- Express emotions with the body in a clear, exaggerated way.
- Respect and support classmates' performances.
Equipment for a class of 25
- clown noses: 25
- music
- cones: 4
Teacher tip
Do the first entrance yourself to break the ice. If there is mocking laughter, stop and restate the rule: a clown's audience is a partner, not a judge.
