Clown Duos: The Boss and the Bumbler
In pairs, one student plays the serious clown who wants everything done right and the other plays the clumsy clown who keeps messing it up, in a short wordless routine. Students work on stage relationships, comic timing, and listening to a partner.
How to play
- Spend 3 minutes explaining the two classic roles: the whiteface (serious, bossy, elegant) and the auguste (scatterbrained, clumsy, lovable). Show a 20-second example with a volunteer.
- Status game in pairs (5 minutes): students walk around the room; on a clap, one acts important and the other copies them badly; on the next clap they switch.
- Each pair picks an everyday task using an item from the assorted equipment (setting up a picnic, hanging a sign, training with a pole) and prepares a 1-minute routine (7 minutes).
- The routine has three parts: the serious clown explains the task, the clumsy clown fails three times, each worse than the last, and they finish with a surprise ending.
- Four pairs perform at once in the four corners while the rest each watch one pair; rotate until everyone has performed (8 minutes).
- 2-minute reflection: what got the laughs, the mistake or the partner's reaction?
Rules
- Hits and trips are always fake, in slow motion, with no real contact.
- Use props carefully and return them when finished.
- No making fun of real people or any group.
- Both partners try both roles.
Variations
Easier
The routine lasts 30 seconds and is built on a single repeated mistake.
Standard
A 1-minute routine with three escalating mistakes and a surprise ending.
Harder
Groups of three, adding a third clown who tries to restore order and makes everything worse.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: plays the whiteface giving orders from a chair, a central role in the routine.
- Autism: a three-panel comic strip of the routine so the structure is clear.
- Advanced students: must include a moment of direct connection with the audience.
Learning goals
- Play a character with a clear status using gesture and posture.
- Build a comic routine with a beginning, middle, and end.
- Listen and react to a partner's ideas on stage.
Equipment for a class of 25
- clown noses: 25
- assorted equipment
Teacher tip
The common mistake is the clumsy clown goofing off without listening; remind them the comedy comes from the serious clown's reaction. Offer simple, soft props to avoid anyone getting hit.
