Closeout 1-on-1: Catch, Read, Decide
The defender passes the ball out from under the rim and sprints to close out on the offensive player, who catches outside the lane and must read the closeout: shoot if the defender is late or drive if they fly at them. It works on closeout defense and offensive decision making.
How to play
- Groups of 4 at each basket: a defender with the ball under the rim and three offensive players in line on the wing. Demonstrate: sprint, chop the feet, high hand (2 min).
- Technique phase: the defender passes out and closes out without stealing; the receiver catches in triple threat and checks the defender's balance. Switch every rep (3 min).
- Read phase: if the defender is late, shoot; if they fly at you, shot-fake and drive with 2 dribbles max. Live defense (5 min).
- Scoring: a basket with the right read is 2, a questionable read is 1, and a steal or well-defended miss is 1 for the defender (3 min).
- Rotate offense to defense and defense to the line; switch wings halfway. Close: which cues said shoot or drive? (2 min).
Rules
- The offensive player must catch outside the lane and may dribble twice at most.
- The defender may not jump into the shooter or touch the arm or body.
- Safety: the rest of the group waits in line outside the lane and only goes when the teacher or a partner says go.
Variations
Easier
The defender starts at the free-throw line and may only raise a hand, no steals.
Standard
Closeout from under the rim with a shoot-or-drive read and a 2-dribble limit.
Harder
Add a second offensive player in the corner for a kick-out if the defender helps.
Adaptations
- Students with limited mobility: act as the passer from under the rim and call out whether the decision was a good one.
- Shy students: start in the technique phase with a trusted partner before moving to the live read.
- Students with lower fitness close out from halfway; advanced students catch at the three-point line.
Learning goals
- Perform a balanced, controlled closeout.
- Read the defender's position to decide between shooting and driving.
- Attack the rim efficiently with few dribbles.

Teacher tip
Defenders who sprint without breaking down always get beaten: have them say run, chop, hand up out loud. Reward good decisions even when the shot misses.
