Climbing Partner Check Routine
In pairs, students learn the mutual check done before roped climbing: harness on correctly, figure-eight knot finished, and carabiner locked. Then they play a spot-the-mistake game with gear the teacher has set up with hidden errors. Students practice risk prevention and shared responsibility.
How to play
- Demo (5 min): the teacher talks through the check out loud: harness buckles, leg loops, figure eight through both tie-in points, and a fist-length tail.
- Practice (7 min): in pairs, each student puts on a harness and ties a figure eight; the partner checks it top to bottom and says each step aloud.
- Switch roles and repeat three times until the check takes under a minute.
- Spot the mistake (8 min): at four stations on mats, harnesses are set up on a dummy or a chair with one hidden error (loose buckle, incomplete eight, unlocked carabiner).
- Each pair has 90 seconds per station to find the error and write it down, then rotates.
- Wrap-up (5 min): go over the answers and each pair performs a full check for the teacher to get signed off.
Rules
- Nobody hangs on or climbs with the gear during this activity.
- Always do the full check in the same order, even when in a hurry.
- If in doubt, ask the teacher; never approve something you don't understand.
Variations
Easier
Check only the harness and the carabiner; the teacher ties the knot.
Standard
Full partner check and four stations with one hidden error.
Harder
Each station has two errors and the pair must explain what could happen because of each one.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student checks partners and plays the stations from a seated position, with gear at their height.
- Hearing impairment: use a card with the check steps and thumbs-up signals for approval.
- Skill level: students who already climb outside school help the teacher with the final sign-off.
Learning goals
- Know and perform the safety check before roped climbing.
- Spot gear errors before using it.
- Take responsibility for your own safety and your partner's.
