Class Wrestling Dual Meet
A team wrestling competition modeled on a high school dual meet: two teams match up wrestlers by weight class in short bouts and add up team points. Students handle optional, private weight ordering, refereeing, timing, and the scoreboard.
How to play
- Four teams of 6 in pinnies and four 13 x 13 ft mat areas. Each team lines up wrestlers from lightest to heaviest by estimate, with nobody weighed in public; the teacher checks that matchups are fair (4 min).
- Roles: on each mat there is a referee, a timekeeper, and a scorer from the team that is resting. Team scores go on butcher paper on the wall (2 min).
- 1-minute bouts on the knees or standing, as the teacher chooses: score by putting the opponent's back on the mat or by riding them from the top for 5 seconds; most points wins.
- Team points: 3 for a win, 1 for a tie, and 1 bonus to the team the referee rates best for sportsmanship in the meet. After each bout, shake hands and switch wrestlers.
- Format: two simultaneous duals of 6 bouts (about 10 min), switch opponents, then two more duals (10 min). Officiating roles rotate every dual.
- Wrap-up (4 min): tally the scoreboard and recognize the team with the most sportsmanship points.
Rules
- No neck grabs, joint locks, lifts, or slams.
- Matchups are by similar weight and skill; the teacher may change them.
- Shake hands with the opponent and the referee before and after each bout.
- No arguing with the referee; the team captain may ask for an explanation.
Variations
Easier
All bouts are from the knees.
Standard
1-minute bouts kneeling or standing, scoring for back exposure or a ride.
Harder
2-minute bouts with a 20-second break halfway through.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student serves as head referee or scorer's table chief, with the final call on ties.
- Shyness: start as scorer and decide whether to wrestle in the second dual.
- Lower fitness: one bout per dual and table roles the rest of the time.
Learning goals
- Take part in a student-run team wrestling competition.
- Carry out refereeing, timing, and scoring roles responsibly.
- Value sportsmanship as part of the team result.
Equipment for a class of 25
- tatami mats: 40
- pinnies: 24

Teacher tip
Never weigh students out loud: lining up by estimate and quietly adjusting is enough. Check the mats before every bout so they don't slide apart.
