Class Mileage Club Challenge
The whole class adds up the laps each student runs to "travel" along a map of a real route. Students build aerobic endurance at their own pace while working toward a shared goal that keeps everyone motivated.
How to play
- Mark a 250 m loop with cones. Post a route on butcher paper split into legs (for example, a road trip between cities), where every 10 class laps moves the class forward one leg (2 min).
- Each student runs at a comfortable pace; every time they cross the finish, they grab a craft stick from the box and drop it in their group's bucket to count laps.
- Continuous running block of 7 minutes where everyone picks their own pace: run, jog, or mix in power walking.
- 2-minute break: groups count craft sticks and a spokesperson moves the marker forward on the map.
- Second 7-minute block, aiming to reach the next leg together.
- Final count and record the total distance so the trip continues next class (2 min).
Rules
- A lap only counts if you pick up a craft stick at the finish.
- Walking is fine, but nobody stops on the loop for more than 30 seconds.
- Pass on the left and don't cut inside the cones.
- No one criticizes anyone's pace: every lap counts the same.
Variations
Easier
Use a 150 m loop and 5-minute blocks.
Standard
Use a 250 m loop and two 7-minute blocks.
Harder
Some laps are marked as "mountain stages" and must include a 50 m pace surge.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: complete a shorter indoor loop where each lap counts the same for the class.
- Visual impairment: run with a guide partner holding a short tether; the guide's laps count too.
- Lower fitness level: the goal is to keep moving the whole block, even at a brisk walk.
Learning goals
- Sustain continuous running at their own pace for extended periods.
- Contribute to a shared goal while valuing everyone's effort.
- Connect the amount of physical activity with health benefits.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 10
- craft sticks: 300
- buckets: 5
- butcher paper: 1
- markers: 3
Teacher tip
Leave the map up in the gym so students can see their progress week to week; it is a big motivator. Put the craft stick buckets off to the side of the finish to avoid traffic jams.
