Class Goal: A Thousand Hits Across All Doubles Courts
A whole-class cooperative challenge: across all the doubles courts, the class must add up a thousand rally hits before time runs out. Each court contributes its streaks and everyone helps reach the goal.
How to play
- Doubles courts with a low rope as the net; explain the challenge and write the goal on the whiteboard (3 min).
- First attempt: each court rallies cooperatively, the four players taking turns, and records its longest streak (6 min).
- Whole-class strategy break: what do the long-streak courts do? Soft hits, height, talking (3 min).
- Second attempt with the rule that everyone on the court hits before anyone hits again (8 min).
- Add up the streaks on the whiteboard and reflect on the challenge, met or not (5 min).
Rules
- Only hits that go over the rope count.
- Soft, below-the-shoulder hits; the aim is a ball your partner can return.
- Each court records its own number honestly.
Variations
Easier
One bounce allowed and a goal of five hundred.
Standard
A thousand hits with an optional bounce.
Harder
A thousand hits with no bounce and alternating forehand and backhand.
Adaptations
- Students with visual impairments: a ball with a bell, and each hitter says their name on contact to orient the next player.
- Limited mobility: that student's court uses a slower ball, such as a balloon, and its hits count the same.
- Students lacking confidence: place them between two partners who feed them easy balls.
Learning goals
- Cooperate toward a shared class goal.
- Adjust each hit to make the partner's shot easier.
- Value group effort over the result.
Equipment for a class of 25
- beach paddles: 28
- foam balls: 7
- ropes: 7
- whiteboard: 1
Teacher tip
Adjust the goal to your group: with twenty-five students and seven courts, a thousand is a solid target on the second attempt. Don't let anyone single out the lowest-scoring court: the strategy break is for courts to help each other.
