Class Flash Mob in Blocks
Each group learns and teaches one block of a shared routine, and at the end the whole class performs it as a flash mob, appearing group by group from different spots outdoors. Students work on group coordination, personal responsibility, and staging.
How to play
- Split the song into 5 blocks of 32 counts and make 5 groups; each group gets a short video or teacher demo of its block (2 minutes).
- Group learning (8 minutes): each group learns its block in a coned-off area until it can dance it without help.
- Chain teaching (10 minutes): in 2-minute rounds, one rep from each group goes to teach its block to the next group; by the end everyone knows all 5 blocks.
- Staging (5 minutes): agree on the order of entrances. Group 1 starts alone and each group joins from a different corner at the start of its block.
- Perform the full flash mob with music (3 minutes), running it a second time if there is time.
- 2-minute reflection: what was harder, learning or teaching?
Rules
- Groups walk into the dance area; no running or pushing.
- Each group is responsible for making sure all its members know their block.
- Dance an arm's length from classmates.
- During explanations, the music stops and everyone listens.
Variations
Easier
A routine of 3 blocks of 16 counts, with everyone starting together.
Standard
Five 32-count blocks with staggered group entrances.
Harder
Add a formation change in every block, such as going from rows to a circle.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a seated version of the routine at one entrance point, or the role of sound tech who cues the start.
- Shyness: join in one of the last groups, when the whole class is already dancing.
- Lower skill: stand in the middle of the formation to copy classmates.
Learning goals
- Perform a group routine in a coordinated way.
- Take responsibility for teaching one part to others.
- Organize a performance with entrances and formations.
Equipment for a class of 25
- music
- speakers: 1
- cones: 10
Teacher tip
Choose a well-known, school-appropriate song with clean lyrics. Keep the moves simple and showy; the impact comes from the group, not from hard steps.
