Circus Tightrope Show
The class becomes circus performers crossing a tightrope, laid flat on the floor, with a pole held as a balance bar. Kids work on dynamic balance, posture, and confidence performing in front of classmates.
How to play
- Lay out 8 straight ropes with two poles beside each. In a circle, say: "Today we are circus tightrope walkers."
- Show them: pole flat in both hands, cross looking at the end of the rope, not at your feet.
- With circus music on, each child crosses their rope with the pole and comes back. Two or three kids per rope, one after another. 4 minutes.
- New tricks: "cross on tiptoes," "stop in the middle and nod hello," "cross sideways like a crab." A new cue every minute. 4 minutes.
- Showtime: half the class sits as the audience and the other half crosses their ropes doing their favorite trick. The audience claps at the end. Then switch. 5 minutes.
- Everyone takes a final bow together. 1 minute.
Rules
- The pole stays flat with both hands, never pointed up.
- Wait until your buddy reaches the end before you start.
- Look at the end of the rope, not at your feet.
- The audience claps for everyone and never laughs at anyone.
Variations
Easier
Cross without a pole, arms out, with the teacher alongside.
Standard
Cross with the pole and stop in the middle to wave.
Harder
Cross backward or with a beanbag on the head while holding the pole.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: follow the rope in a wheelchair, pole across the lap.
- Shy kids: perform with a friend, or be the audience first and perform afterward.
- More skilled kids invent their own trick; kids who need support cross holding the teacher's hand, no pole.
Learning goals
- Keep balance moving along a line while holding an object.
- Control posture by looking ahead while moving.
- Enjoy performing for the group and cheer for classmates.
Equipment for a class of 25
- ropes: 8
- poles: 16
- music: 1
Teacher tip
Have the music and poles ready before you start. If a child doesn't want to perform, make them the announcer who calls out each trick; they're still part of the show.
