Choreography with Specialist Observers for Each Criterion
Groups perform the choreography they have been preparing, and each audience member assesses only one rubric criterion: synchronization, use of space, timing with the music or expressiveness. With the four specialized reports, each group picks its weakest area, rehearses it and performs again to check whether it improved.
How to play
- Review the four-criterion rubric and give each student a card with the criterion they will watch in each performance, switching criterion between groups (4 min).
- First showing: each group of five or six performs its 1-minute routine and the audience scores only their criterion and notes one specific moment (10 min).
- Observers of each criterion huddle for 30 seconds, agree on one message and give it to the group: four short messages per group (5 min).
- Each group picks its lowest-rated criterion and rehearses a specific fix, such as marking the formation change or counting under their breath (6 min).
- Second showing, and the same observers check only the chosen criterion: better, the same or worse (5 min).
Rules
- Each observer assesses only their criterion, even if they notice other things.
- Messages point to a specific moment in the routine, not to a person.
- Every group gets applause at the end of both showings.
- Cones mark the stage and no one in the audience crosses it during a performance.
Variations
Easier
Work with two criteria instead of four and a 40-second routine.
Standard
Four criteria with specialist observers, feedback and a second showing.
Harder
Each group must improve two criteria during rehearsal and observers justify their level with an example.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: takes part in the routine with trunk and arm movements built into the formations and can observe timing with the music.
- Hearing impairment: a partner or a light marks the beat, and the student is assigned to watch use of space.
- Shyness or stage anxiety: may dance in the second row of the formation, and messages are given to the group in writing.
Learning goals
- Improve a choreographic piece based on specialized feedback.
- Observe one artistic quality criterion accurately.
- Make group decisions about what to improve first.

Teacher tip
Assign criteria so each group gets at least two observers per criterion. With many groups, run the showings on two stages at once.
