Choreography Cascade: Each Group Teaches a Block
Each group creates a 16-count block and teaches it to the rest of the class in a chain until everyone has built a full routine for a school showcase or a performance for elementary kids. Students work on rhythm, teaching in chunks, and coordinating a whole-class project.
How to play
- Pick a song with a strong beat and make 4 groups of 6 or 7. Assign each group a section of the song (2 min).
- Create (6 min): each group invents a 2 x 8-count block with simple traveling moves and practices until it's in sync.
- Cascade teaching (12 min): Group 1 teaches its block to the whole class in 3 minutes, counting “5, 6, 7, 8” out loud and breaking it into 4-count pieces. Then Group 2 teaches theirs and links it to the first, and so on through Group 4.
- Full run-through (3 min): the whole class dances the complete routine twice to music, with each group in front during its block.
- Refine (2 min): each group suggests one change to make its block easier for elementary kids.
Rules
- Each block must be learnable in 3 minutes: simple, repeated moves.
- The teaching group faces away from the class so everyone mirrors correctly.
- Safety: no jumping turns or lifts; dance in athletic shoes.
- While one group teaches, everyone else practices without talking.
Variations
Easier
Eight-count blocks and a slower song.
Standard
Sixteen-count blocks taught in a chain by four groups.
Harder
Each block includes a formation or facing change that the group must also teach.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: takes part with arm and upper-body moves, and their block can be adapted to seated.
- Hearing impairment: the teaching group shows the counts on their fingers and with visible claps.
- Shyness: counts and demos from inside the group instead of up front.
Learning goals
- Create a dance block that fits the musical beat.
- Teach a sequence in chunks using counts and demonstration.
- Coordinate several groups' work into one shared performance.
Equipment for a class of 25
- music: 1
- speaker: 1
Teacher tip
Choose a clean song with a clear 8-count structure. Record the full run-through so students can review the routine at home.
