Choreographed Cardio Boxing: Combos on the Musical Phrase
A no-contact cardio boxing routine where every combination of punches and footwork fits a 32-count musical phrase. Students build aerobic endurance and coordination, and each group creates and leads a phrase of its own.
How to play
- Basic technique: guard, jab, cross, hook and uppercut into the air, with soft knees and hip rotation (5 min).
- Teacher's phrase A: jab-cross four times, hook-hook four times and step touch in guard for eight counts (4 min).
- Phrase B: alternating uppercuts, knee strikes into the air and side shuffle with a jab (4 min).
- Groups of five create a 32-count phrase C with at least three different punches (6 min).
- Final routine A-B-C with every group's phrase C in a row; each group leads its own from the front (6 min).
Rules
- Punch into the air without locking the elbow, to protect the joint.
- Keep two arm's lengths from everyone.
- Never punch toward another person, not even as a joke.
- There is always a no-jump option.
Variations
Easier
Only jab, cross and step touch at half tempo.
Standard
Three 32-count phrases, one created by each group.
Harder
Add low front kicks, and phrase C must include a change of facing.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: throws all punches from the wheelchair and swaps footwork for torso rotations.
- Shoulder injury: punches at half extension and below shoulder height.
- Autism or noise sensitivity: stands away from the speaker, which stays at a moderate volume.
Learning goals
- Sustain high aerobic effort to the beat of the music.
- Throw punches into the air with technique that protects the joints.
- Create and lead a choreographed phrase as a group.
Equipment for a class of 25
- speaker: 1
Teacher tip
Use music at 130–140 BPM. Cue each phrase with a 5, 6, 7, 8 count and allow water between phrases.
