Chinese Jump Rope: Create It, Copy It
Chinese jump rope in groups of three: the jumper makes up a four-step pattern (in, out, on, cross...) and the others must copy it; if everyone succeeds, the rope moves up. Students work on coordinated jumping, movement memory, and creativity.
How to play
- Groups of three with an elastic jump cord about 10 ft long tied in a loop: two players hold it around their ankles, far enough apart to stretch it, and the third jumps (2 min).
- Review the basic steps: in (both feet inside the cords), out, on (one foot on each cord), straddle (one foot on each side), and cross (jump with legs crossed) (3 min).
- The jumper creates a four-step pattern, says it out loud, and does it. Then the other two try it in turn, rotating who holds (8 min).
- If all three complete it without a miss, the rope goes up: ankles, calves, then knees. If someone misses, try again at the same height with a new pattern from the next player (included in the time above).
- Swap: each group teaches its best pattern to another group, who must copy it at ankle height (5 min).
- Wrap-up: discuss which step was hardest to remember or perform (2 min).
Rules
- Patterns have exactly four steps and are said out loud before jumping.
- Switch holders every attempt so everyone jumps equally.
- Safety: only release the cord after a warning and never raise it to face height; jump in sneakers.
Variations
Easier
Two- or three-step patterns, always at ankle height.
Standard
Four-step patterns, moving up to knee height.
Harder
Six-step patterns or patterns with a half turn.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student holds and judges the pattern, or performs the steps with their hands on a cord on the floor.
- Students with autism: use picture cards of each step to build the pattern.
- Lower fitness: keep the cord at ankle height and rest while holding.
Learning goals
- Coordinate jumps with different landings on an elastic cord.
- Memorize and repeat a movement sequence.
- Create original patterns and share them with other groups.
Equipment for a class of 25
- elastic jump cords: 9
Teacher tip
Fabric elastic about 3/4 in wide works best; knot it securely. If a group gets stuck, suggest a simple pattern to get them going again.
