Charity Fun Run: Start, Water Station, and Finish
A practice run for organizing a school charity fun run: students split into start, timing, water station, and safety roles, then take turns running the course they set up. They build aerobic endurance and learn to manage a real sports event.
How to play
- Mark a 300 m loop around the blacktop with cones and make 3 teams of 8 plus one race director (2 min).
- Each team assigns roles with cards: starter, two timers, two at the water station with cups, two safety marshals at the turns, and one at the finish logging bib numbers (3 min).
- Heat 1 (5 min): Team A runs wearing bibs while B runs the event and C watches with a checklist. Each runner does as many laps as they can at a comfortable pace and laps are recorded.
- Heats 2 and 3 (10 min): rotate roles so every team runs, organizes, and observes once.
- Debrief (5 min): observers read their checklists (bottlenecks, missed times, unwatched spots) and the class picks three changes for the real fun run.
Rules
- Run at a talking pace: this is not an all-out race.
- Safety: slow down at the water station and drop cups in a bucket, never on the course.
- Marshals call “On your left!” and stop the heat if anyone feels sick.
- Every runner wears a visible bib and checks in at the finish each lap.
Variations
Easier
Three-minute heats and only three roles: start, finish, and water.
Standard
Five-minute heats with all roles and a checklist.
Harder
Add a partner relay division and total-lap standings calculated by the finish table.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: takes part in a wheelchair or walking on a shorter inner loop and serves as race director.
- Hearing impairment: the start is signaled with a flag as well as by voice.
- Lower fitness: mixes running and walking, and every lap counts the same.
Learning goals
- Sustain continuous running at a moderate aerobic pace.
- Take on an organizing role within a sports event.
- Identify and suggest improvements to race logistics.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 30
- stopwatches: 3
- race bibs: 25
- plastic cups: 30

Teacher tip
Write role cards with one-line instructions so no one is unsure. If you hold the real run, work with the PTA or a local nonprofit on where the money goes.
