Changing Safe Zone Color Tag
A tag game with four colored safe zones in the corners, but only the one the teacher calls is safe, and it changes every few seconds, so students must stay alert and keep moving. Students practice attention, reaction time, and moving quickly.
How to play
- Mark a 20 x 20 m area. In each corner, place 3 hoops and a cone of one color: red, blue, yellow, and green. Pick 3 taggers in pinnies (1 min).
- On the whistle, taggers chase. The teacher calls out and holds up a colored cone: only the hoops of that color are safe.
- Inside the active safe zone you're safe, but only two students fit in each hoop; if it's full, keep moving.
- Every 10 to 15 seconds, the teacher calls a new color and everyone must leave the old safe zone and run to the new one.
- A tagged player puts on the pinny and becomes a tagger; the old tagger is free. Each round lasts 2 minutes.
- Play 4 rounds; in the last ones, the teacher only holds up the cone without saying the color.
Rules
- No more than two students in each hoop of the active safe zone.
- Leave the safe zone as soon as the color changes, without waiting.
- Taggers may not camp next to the active safe zone.
- Run with your eyes up, since everyone switches corners at once.
Variations
Easier
Change the color every 20 seconds and use only 2 taggers.
Standard
Change every 10 to 15 seconds, three taggers, and two students per hoop.
Harder
Call two colors at once and remove one hoop from each corner every round.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student's safe hoop is always active and close by, and they can tag anyone who passes near them.
- Hearing loss: the teacher always holds the colored cone up high as well as calling it.
- Visual impairment or color blindness: also label safe zones with shapes or the color name on a large card.
Learning goals
- React quickly to visual and verbal signals.
- Move toward a target while dodging others.
- Respect the safe zone capacity limits.
Equipment for a class of 25
- colored cones: 4
- hoops: 12
- pinnies: 3
Teacher tip
Avoid changing colors on a steady beat so students stay alert. If taggers always catch kids in transit, give the youngest students more time between calls.
