Challenge Card 3-on-3 Volleyball
3-on-3 games where, before each serve, the serving team flips a card with a condition both teams must meet on that rally. Students practice adjusting tactics to changing rules, using every skill, and talking things through as a team.
How to play
- Prepare a deck of 12 cards per court with conditions like "sets only," "three contacts required," "third contact to the back court," or "everyone touches" (3 min).
- Set up 4 courts of 3-on-3 with the net at 7 ft; teams wear different pinnie colors (2 min).
- Before each serve, the server draws a card and reads it out loud; the rally is played with that condition, and a team that breaks it loses the point (14 min).
- Every 7 min, teams switch courts and opponents; the team that wins the rally serves and draws the next card.
- To finish, each team invents a new card and explains which skill it works on; add them to the deck for next lesson (6 min).
Rules
- Read the card out loud before the serve so both teams hear it.
- If it's unclear whether the condition was met, replay the rally.
- Underhand serve from the end line and no hard spikes.
- Cards go back in the deck face down after each rally.
Variations
Easier
Use a deck with simple conditions and allow catching the first contact.
Standard
3-on-3 with one condition card per rally.
Harder
Draw two cards per rally and meet both conditions at once.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: add cards like "the player at the net must touch it" so the student's role is key to the rally.
- Hearing impairment: show the card to the other team as well as reading it.
- Lower fitness level: teams of 4 on the same court, with one player resting every 3 points.
Learning goals
- Adjust how they play to rules that change every rally.
- Use sets, bumps, and serves according to the card's condition.
- Talk as a team to decide how to meet the condition.
Equipment for a class of 25
- volleyballs: 4
- nets: 4
- challenge cards: 48
- pinnies: 24
Teacher tip
Color-code the cards by difficulty and let each group choose its starting color. Student-made cards are usually great and boost buy-in.
