Chalk Pathways: The Dance's Path Becomes the Artwork
Inspired by land art and action painting, groups create a movement sequence on the playground and leave their mark by drawing the paths they traveled in chalk. The final drawing, photographed from above, becomes a temporary artwork that shows the geometry of the dance.
How to play
- Show examples of land art and action painting and present the idea: the body as a brush and the playground as a canvas (3 min).
- In groups of four, improvise traveling movements to music, varying straight, curved, zigzag and spiral paths, and high, middle and low levels (5 min).
- Set a 40-second sequence and repeat it until memorized, deciding who starts and where paths cross (6 min).
- Each member draws their own path in chalk in a different color while the group repeats the sequence slowly (6 min).
- Gallery: photograph the works from a window or bleachers, each group dances on its drawing and explains its design choices (5 min).
Rules
- Only crouch to draw while the rest of the group is still, to avoid stepping on hands or bumping.
- Chalk is washable and used only on the playground surface.
- Overhead photos are taken from a safe spot with a railing, never leaning out.
- Each group works inside its marked section.
Variations
Easier
The sequence lasts 20 seconds and only one group member's path is drawn.
Standard
A 40-second sequence with four paths drawn in different colors.
Harder
The group designs the final drawing on paper first and then builds a dance that produces it exactly.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair user: their path is drawn with chalk taped to the chair or traced by a partner following them.
- Visual impairment: move guided by a partner and then trace the raised tape on the key lines with a hand or foot.
- Autism: get a simple, fixed path and a clear starting spot within the section.
Learning goals
- Create a movement sequence with aesthetic intent using space.
- Connect movement, geometry and visual art.
- Value the artistic and respectful use of school spaces.
Equipment for a class of 25
- chalk: 24
- speaker: 1
- tablets or phones: 7
Teacher tip
Let the custodial staff know, or have students rinse it off with buckets of water at the end. Photos from the second floor look amazing for a display.
