Chalk Ladder Footwork Code Relay
Each team draws its own agility ladder on the blacktop with chalk and, relay style, performs the footwork pattern shown on a randomly drawn card. Students work on foot coordination, quick foot contacts and teamwork to finish without mistakes.
How to play
- Make 5 teams of 5. Each team draws a 10-box chalk ladder with 16-inch boxes and places a cone 8 yards past the end (4 min).
- Show six pattern cards: A, one foot in each box; B, two feet in each box; C, lateral two feet in each box; D, in-in-out; E, feet together and apart; F, alternating hops. Demonstrate each one (3 min).
- Practice round: everyone tries all six patterns at 60% while a teammate tells them if they step on a line (4 min).
- Relay: the captain draws a card and calls the letter; the first runner does the ladder in that pattern, sprints to the cone, runs back outside the ladder and high-fives the next runner.
- One teammate is the judge: if a runner steps on a line, they redo the ladder before heading to the cone. The first team to complete five legs wins; play 3 rounds (7 min).
- Switch captain and judge every round. At the end, each team invents a new card and teaches it to the class (2 min).
Rules
- Don't step on the chalk lines; if you do, redo the ladder.
- Return to your team outside the ladder, never through it.
- Safety: the surface must be dry and sand-free, with ladders 3 yards apart.
- No one leaves until they get the high five.
Variations
Easier
Use only patterns A, B and C with 20-inch boxes.
Standard
Six random patterns, a 10-box ladder and a five-leg relay.
Harder
The captain calls two letters and the runner switches patterns at box five.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: weave the wheelchair between boxes or do the pattern with hands on a ladder drawn on the wall.
- Autism or shyness: use picture cards of each pattern and allow practice before others watch.
- Lower fitness: skip the cone sprint, do only the ladder and walk back.
Learning goals
- Coordinate fast footwork patterns without staring at the feet.
- Memorize and perform a movement sequence from a code.
- Work as a team in the captain and judge roles.
Equipment for a class of 25
- chalk: 10
- cards: 30
- cones: 5
Teacher tip
Draw one model ladder before class so teams can copy the measurements; boxes that are too small cause trips. Cue students to stay on the balls of their feet with short arm swings.
