Chalk Ladder Copy My Feet
In pairs on a chalk ladder, one student makes up a sequence of in-and-out steps and the other copies it; every correct copy adds a step. It builds footwork coordination, motor memory, and creativity.
How to play
- Draw six chalk ladders with 8 boxes of 16 by 16 inches, 10 feet apart, with two pairs per ladder taking turns (2 min).
- Teach four steps: "in" (one foot in the box), "both in," "out" (one foot on each side), and "jump" (two feet into the next box). Everyone tries them on one pass down the ladder (3 min).
- Echo round: the leader does a 4-step sequence, for example in-in-out-out, and the partner repeats it. If the copy is right, add a step and the sequence grows (5 min).
- When someone misses, switch roles and start again at 4 steps. Each pair records its best (3 min).
- Speed round: each pair repeats its best sequence down the whole ladder, first slowly, then fast without touching lines. Finish by teaching it to the other pair on your ladder (5 min).
Rules
- Stepping on a line doesn't knock you out: redo the step and keep going.
- Wait outside the ladder at the far end; in the speed round only one student is on it.
- Leaders must be able to do their own sequence.
Variations
Easier
Use only two steps (in and out), 20-inch boxes, and start with 2-step sequences.
Standard
Use all four steps, starting at 4 and adding one at a time.
Harder
Add side entries and crossovers, and the copier sees the sequence only once.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: do the sequence with the wheels, or with the hands on a ladder drawn on a table.
- Students with autism: provide a picture card of the four steps to plan and check the sequence.
- Fitness level: strong movers use only their non-dominant foot; students who struggle focus on memory at a slow pace.
Learning goals
- Perform quick footwork sequences accurately.
- Memorize and reproduce longer and longer movement patterns.
- Create sequences matched to the pair's level.

Teacher tip
Draw the ladders before class and touch up scuffed lines. Remind kids the record belongs to the pair: you win by going far together, not by making your partner miss.
