Category Freeze Tag
A freeze tag game where frozen players get unfrozen by telling their rescuer a word from the round's category. Students practice dodging, teamwork, and vocabulary recall; world language classes can play it with words in the target language.
How to play
- Mark a 65 x 65 ft area with cones. Choose 4 taggers wearing pinnies; everyone else spreads out (1 min).
- The teacher announces the round's category, such as colors, animals, foods, clothing, or body parts, and starts play with the whistle.
- When tagged, a player freezes with feet apart and one hand raised.
- To unfreeze them, a free classmate comes over and gives a high five, and the frozen player must say a word from the category, such as "giraffe." If they are stuck, the rescuer may give a hint.
- No repeating a word you already used that round. Each round lasts 2 minutes, then switch taggers and category (10 min, 5 rounds).
- At the end, the class recalls all the different words that came up and the teacher clarifies or adds to them (3 min).
Rules
- Tag with an open hand on shoulders or back, no pushing.
- While a rescue is happening, nobody can tag either player.
- If you step outside the cones, you freeze yourself.
- Change taggers every round so everyone gets to play both roles.
Variations
Easier
Use easy categories like colors or numbers and let the rescuer say the word together with the frozen player.
Standard
One category per round and a new word each time you get unfrozen.
Harder
Require a short sentence, such as "I like apples," or words that start with a letter the tagger calls out.
Adaptations
- Students with limited mobility: tag using a pool noodle to extend their reach, or play in a zone where they have an advantage.
- Students with autism or shy students: carry a picture card for the category and point to the word while saying it.
- Fitness level: add or remove taggers and change the size of the area to match the group.
Learning goals
- Dodge and change direction to avoid being tagged.
- Recall vocabulary from different categories quickly.
- Help frozen classmates even when it means taking a risk.
Equipment for a class of 25
- pinnies: 4
- cones: 8
Teacher tip
Review the category vocabulary right before each round, especially with younger students.
