Category Ball on the Move
In small circles, students pass a foam ball, and the catcher names something in the announced category before passing and switching spots. Students practice passing and catching, quick decisions, and focus, with no one sitting out.
How to play
- Make 4 circles of 6 (one of 7), about 6 ft apart, around a center cone. Each circle has a foam ball (1 min).
- The teacher calls a category: animals, sports, fruits, colors. The student with the ball names something in it and passes to anyone.
- The catcher has 3 seconds to name something new and pass. Then they jog around the center cone and fill an open spot (4 min).
- Anyone who repeats, freezes, or drops the ball does 5 jumping jacks and rejoins. Every 2 minutes, change the category and the pass: bounce, underhand, chest, or non-dominant hand (7 min).
- Final round: answers in a category must start with a letter the teacher calls (3 min).
Rules
- Say the catcher's name before passing.
- No repeated words within a category.
- Look where you're going as you circle the cone.
Variations
Easier
Circles of 4, rolled passes, and easy categories.
Standard
Circles of 6, air passes, 3 seconds, and a lap around the cone.
Harder
Two balls per circle with different categories, or only 2 seconds.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student stays in place and receives rolled or bounce passes.
- Hearing impairment: show the category written on the board or a card.
- Shyness or language difficulties: answer by acting out the word, starting with a familiar category.
Learning goals
- Pass and catch reliably while solving a thinking task.
- Decide quickly whom to pass to and what to say.
- Move into open spaces without collisions.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Foam balls: 4
- Cones: 4
Teacher tip
Pick categories from other subjects to reinforce them. If students keep passing to the same friends, add a rule: no passing back to whoever passed to you.
