Catch-and-Throw Wall Ball
A 1-on-1 wall game where, instead of hitting the ball, players catch it off one bounce and throw it back at the wall from that exact spot within three seconds. It works as an entry point to wall sports, teaching students to read ball paths and find open space.
How to play
- Chalk wall sections about 16 feet wide with a short line 20 inches up and a court on the ground 20 feet deep; set up pairs, one per section.
- Explain in 2 minutes: you serve by throwing the ball at the wall, and your opponent must catch it on the fly or after a single bounce.
- Whoever catches the ball can't take steps: they throw it from where they caught it within three seconds, counting out loud.
- You lose the point if the ball bounces twice, your throw hits below the line or lands out, or you travel with the ball.
- Play four 3-minute games and switch partners by moving one section to the right after each game.
- In the last two games, require students who catch with two hands to throw with their non-dominant hand.
Rules
- Always throw at the wall, never at your opponent.
- If you collide going for the ball, replay the point.
- Keep your distance from neighboring sections and only retrieve stray balls when they stop their point.
Variations
Easier
Allow one step before the throw and two bounces.
Standard
Catch off one bounce, throw within three seconds without steps, and play 3-minute games.
Harder
Throw within two seconds, using a backhand motion that starts behind the hip.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student may catch after two bounces and throw while seated.
- Hearing impairment: the opponent counts the three seconds by raising fingers.
- Fitness or skill level: use a larger, softer ball for students who struggle to catch.
Learning goals
- Predict where the ball will bounce after rebounding off the wall.
- Throw to the area farthest from the opponent.
- Understand the logic of wall sports before adding paddles or rackets.
Equipment for a class of 25
- tennis balls: 13
- chalk: 4
Teacher tip
This is a great lead-up to paddle wall ball: students who miss with a paddle succeed here and grasp the tactics. If a section is moving too fast, make the court bigger to lengthen the rallies.
