Carnival Parade Crews
In small groups, students create a parade crew around a carnival theme, make up a parade routine with formation changes, and perform it for the class. Students practice rhythm, expressive movement, and creating together.
How to play
- Form 5 groups of 5 and give each a card with a theme: robots, jungle animals, clowns, pirates, or astronauts. Each group takes 5 colored scarves (2 min).
- With carnival music on, everyone parades around the space copying the teacher: march, side step, turn, and skip, each in 8-count blocks (4 min).
- Each crew builds a parade of four 8-count blocks: a character step, a side step, a turn with the scarves, and a frozen final pose (8 min).
- Require at least one formation change: line to column, column to circle, or circle to V. The teacher visits each group counting the beats.
- Rehearse twice in a row with the full song. Then each crew parades down an aisle of cones in front of the class (8 min).
- After each parade, the audience shares one thing they liked and one idea to make it better. Finish with a big parade of all the crews together (3 min).
Rules
- Every crew member takes part in every block.
- Scarves move overhead or to the side, never toward other people's faces.
- The audience stays quiet and applauds at the end of each parade.
- The group hears every idea before deciding.
Variations
Easier
Two 8-count blocks and a single-line formation for the whole parade.
Standard
Four 8-count blocks with one formation change.
Harder
Six blocks, two formation changes, and a canon moment inside the crew.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the crew adapts steps to the wheelchair (turns, side moves), and the student can lead the final pose.
- Shyness: the student can carry the crew's banner or count the beats at the start.
- Hearing impairment: the teacher shows the counts with a hand and the crew uses a visible leader at the front.
Learning goals
- Match movements to the music in 8-count blocks.
- Create a parade routine with formation changes as a team.
- Give respectful feedback on classmates' performances.
Equipment for a class of 25
- music: 1
- colored scarves: 25
- cards: 5
Teacher tip
Have a ready-made 8-count sequence for groups that get stuck. Music with a strong, steady beat makes it much easier for students to count.
