Carnival Character Match-Up
Each student secretly gets a carnival character and moves like it to the music; when the music stops, they must find their partner through gestures alone, without talking. Students practice expressive movement, observation, and nonverbal communication.
How to play
- Make cards with 12 or 13 characters, each appearing twice: pirate, robot, ballerina, clown, superhero, astronaut, magician, penguin… Hand one to each student without anyone seeing it (2 min).
- While the music plays, everyone travels around the space moving like their character, without saying who it is.
- When the music stops, each student looks for their partner by watching and copying gestures. No talking and no showing your card.
- When a pair thinks they have found each other, they sit down and show their cards to the teacher. If correct, they make up a carnival handshake together (3 min per round).
- In the next round, pairs join another pair, and the four of them create a 10-second scene that the class has to guess.
- Collect and reshuffle the cards. Play 3 full rounds (10 min).
Rules
- No talking or showing cards until you are sitting down.
- Use the whole space without touching others.
- Every way of acting out a character is welcome: no laughing at classmates.
- Freeze as soon as the music stops.
Variations
Easier
Use only 6 well-known characters with a picture on the card.
Standard
Twelve characters in pairs and a final scene in groups of four.
Harder
Characters come in trios, and the search is done moving in slow motion.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: gestures can be arms and face only; partners come to the student using a wheelchair.
- Hearing impairment: signal each phase by holding up a red card as well as stopping the music.
- Autism: use picture cards and pick a comfortable character ahead of time.
Learning goals
- Express a character through body movement and gesture.
- Communicate without words and watch classmates closely.
- Take part in a traditional carnival celebration through play.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cards: 26
- music: 1
Teacher tip
Before starting, do a practice round where everyone acts out the same character to break the ice. Choose characters with very different gestures so the search doesn't drag on.
